How to choose stocks

Investing

How do you choose which stock to invest in? Do you just look for whatever is popular at the time? Or do you ask what someone else is investing in so you can copy them? Neither of those are good answers!

Here are some things to consider when picking stocks.

First of all, why are you investing? Do you want a return for a summer vacation? Or are you investing for your toddler’s college education? Or are you investing for your retirement? All of these will give you the timeline for your investment and how quickly you’ll need to access the money.

Next, what’s your risk tolerance like? If you’re someone who likes to bet it all, you might want to look at more risky investments. They can give you big rewards, but you can also lose big. If you’re more risk averse, your investments are typically more stable. They might not have any big gains, but there shouldn’t be any big losses either.

You also need to look at the company’s financials and overall business. Is this a company that you trust? Or does it seem like they’re mismanaged and will go out of business soon? Doing research on the company can help you solidify if they have the potential for growth.

There’s a lot more that you should consider when picking stocks, so it’s important to learn the basics of investing. Choosing the right stock is part research, part strategy, and part patience. The more you educate yourself, the better your decisions will be.
