Knutsford Express is planning to set up an office in St. Thomas as the parish experiences rapid development.
Speaking on Taking Stock with Kalilah Reynolds, CEO Oliver Townsend, this expansion will allow the company to serve residents in the area better while taking advantage of infrastructure improvements.
"We currently serve 13 of Jamaica's 14 parishes, and we anticipate starting operations in Morant Bay by January," Townsend shared.
He added that the move will open direct connections from St. Thomas to 16 locations across the island, boosting accessibility for residents and travellers.
Knutsford Express is optimistic about St. Thomas’ potential, especially with the ongoing construction of the coastal highway. Once completed, the new road will shorten travel time between Morant Bay and Port Antonio, and Townsend is excited about the possibilities.
"We could almost have the ability to circumnavigate the island in a day, which is a big deal," he said.
The expansion comes after a strong financial year for Knutsford Express. The company recorded a 12% increase in revenue, reaching nearly $2 billion, while net profits rose by 2% to $309 million. Townsend credited the growth to better scheduling, the addition of state-of-the-art buses, and other income-generating investments.
"We've been answering the needs of our core business while also optimizing operations," he explained.
According to the CEO, the company's Drax Hall facility in St. Ann which opened in 2020, was a key contributor to this success.
The facility, which is Knutsford’s only owned depot, not only supports transportation services but also generates income through leasing, rentals, and a café.
Townsend revealed that Drax Hall is being considered as a model for future developments, indicating further growth opportunities for the company.
With new routes, improved equipment, and expansion plans, Knutsford Express is set to continue its mission of connecting Jamaicans across the island.
"There's a lot of headroom for growth, and we're excited about what's ahead," Townsend said.
